Farms / Animal Factory
When we think about where the meat we eat comes
from, most of us picture pastures and barnyards. But a large percentage
of the meat produced in the U.S. is not raised in this family farm
setting.
Picture instead rows of enormous enclosed metal
buildings, with no farmhouses, barns, farm equipment or animals
in sight. The livestock are raised inside and do not see the open
sky until they are herded onto a truck to be sent to slaughter,
so it's hard to tell what is being produced from the outside.
The owner is not a farmer whose family has worked
the land for generations, but a large corporation which likely has
biotechnology, grain, slaughtering and/or meat processing divisions
and controls production from animal genetics to the market shelf.
