WORC ACTION ALERT: TELL YOUR SENATORS
TO KEEP THE ENERGY BILL CLEAN

--Do not circulate this alert after June 14, 2005--

The Senate is scheduled to start floor debate the week of June 13th on a comprehensive energy bill. On the issues WORC members care about, the Senate version is stronger than the House version; therefore it is important that we 1) block any amendments that would weaken the Senate version as well as 2) add amendments that would improve it.

This is a critical time for you to ask your Senators to exercise leadership and pass a forward looking energy bill that promotes a secure and diversified energy supply and safeguards human health, land and water.

What You Can Do:

Call your Senators by close of business on Tuesday, June 14. Call the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Senators ’ offices.

What to Say When You Call:

Urge your Senators to:

1. Promote clean energy by supporting a 10% federal renewable energy standard (RES) and a ten-year extension of the federal production tax credit.

2. Oppose any amendments that would give the oil and gas industry exemptions from the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act. (This includes exemptions for the use of toxic chemicals for hydraulic fracturing and from management of storm water run-off.)

3. Oppose limiting public participation and environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act for oil and gas operations.

4. Oppose limiting the Bureau of Land Management to only ten days to make decisions on oil and gas drilling permit applications.

5. Oppose the federal government giving private utilities the right to take private land by eminent domain to site electric transmission lines.
