For thirty-five years, the Northern Plains Resource Council has helped Montana citizens organize to protect water quality, family farms and ranches, and our unique quality of life.

Job Description: Work with Northern Plains’ locally-based affiliate groups (mostly in small, rural communities), and with our issue task forces. We seek an experienced Community Organizer who is ready to begin taking on increased responsibility for our work and for building the strength of our organization. Overnight travel averages perhaps 2-3 times a month. As a Northern Plains Organizer, you won’t be tied to a desk, you’ll meet lots of people, and you’ll make change happen at the grassroots level.

Specific duties include:
Plan and implement strategy on issues
Coordinate issue campaigns
Conduct research
Participate in grassroots fundraising
Train members in organizational skills
Communicate clearly, orally and in writing
Recruit new members
Generate turnout for events
Help members in their contacts with public officials and the press
Mentor less experienced Organizers
Work with the Staff Director to
Take on key roles in developing the overall capacity of the organization
Assist with duties such as member renewal, special events, fundraising, and routine office tasks

Qualifications: Commitment to Northern Plains’ issues and values, ability to get along well with people from diverse backgrounds, strong speaking and writing skills, ability to travel and be away overnight, willingness to work long hours when needed. Also helpful: experience (either as a volunteer or staffer) with a nonprofit organization working for social change or on environmental issues, experience in a political campaign, general familiarity with the workings of legislative bodies and agencies, familiarity with conservation and agriculture issues, experience with the media and fundraising. This is very much a “people” job.

Salary and benefits: Salary $25,000-$35,000, DOE; includes health insurance (80% paid by employer); 4 weeks vacation; pension program; sabbatical program after 5 years of employment.

Job Description: Our Bookkeeper is responsible for keeping and tracking the financial records of the organization and ensuring that all payments, taxes, and other disbursements are made in an accurate and timely manner. He or she is responsible for payroll and associated recordkeeping. He or she prepares monthly financial updates and prepares other financial information as needed. The Bookkeeper will use QuickBooks software for accounting, and will also maintain appropriate paper files.

This is an hourly, part-time position of approximately 20 hours per week, working Monday - Friday.

Specific Responsibilities:
The Bookkeeper is responsible for keeping and tracking the financial records of the organization and ensuring that all payments, taxes, and other disbursements are made in an accurate and timely manner. Duties include:

  • managing monthly payroll, including reimbursements, calculating vacation and sick leave, and other payroll items;
  • reconciling all bank and brokerage accounts on a monthly basis;
  • ensuring that all receipts are assigned to the proper accounts;
  • preparing all Northern Plains financial statements and year-to-date budget accounts on a monthly basis;
  • reviewing financial records with management;
  • preparing and filing all tax reports (workman’s compensation, state and federal taxes);
  • maintaining the computer accounting system;
  • ensuring payment of all accounts payable, as authorized;
  • ensuring accounts receivable are billed and followed up on;
  • arranging prompt reimbursements for staff expenses;
  • handling inquiries from vendors about payment questions;
  • obtaining bids from vendors, as necessary;
  • reconciling transactions from special events;
  • providing information to auditors for the annual audit.
The Bookkeeper is also responsible for performing the administrative tasks that all employees perform. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • filling out monthly time sheets and other office paperwork, as appropriate (e.g., requests for leave, sick leave, reimbursements);
  • answering the office phones if no one else is available;
  • taking messages and delivering them to the appropriate staff person in a timely fashion;
  • attending assigned meetings; and
  • taking on additional assignments when other staff persons are absent and as requested.

Necessary Qualifications: The Bookkeeper must be skilled in accounting techniques and must work accurately. He or she must be organized and detail-oriented. He or she must be familiar with QuickBooks. He or she must be able to take direction and then work independently. Trustworthiness is a high priority, and a background check will be conducted.

Wage: $12-$15/hour, DOE. This is a 20 hour/week position

Job Description:

Organize campaigns and communities! Join a top rural organizing group at critical juncture in South Dakota politics. Opportunities abound in '08 to move progressive public policies as the political future of the state hangs in the balance. Help coordinate grassroots election campaigns on the local, state, and federal level. Fight for family farms, economic justice, and renewable energy. Train and develop new community leaders. Work hard, change the world. This is a people person’s job.

Specific Duties:

  • Plan and coordinate campaign strategies on public policies and local grassroots elections.
