Family farmers, ranchers and consumers are locked
in a battle for safe and healthy food against giant international
food corporations. Many important food decisions are being made
at the boardroom table rather than the dining room table. Multi-national
food and commodity companies play fast and loose with the safety
of our food, and make huge profits off of your food dollar and the
low price they pay to farmers and ranchers.
Were fighting for a moratorium on the introduction of GMO
wheat to protect the environment and economy of the Northern Great
Plains. We want to insure that genetic engineering does not harm
the health of people or the environment. Were working for
full and accurate labeling of all GMO foods and food ingredients;
review by state governments and a comprehensive environmental analysis
prior to the release of new genetically-engineered crops; and full
liability by the makers of gene-altered products for any harm or
unforeseen consequences caused by their products.
Were fighting to protect consumers right to know by
requiring the clear and accurate labeling at the retail level of
all foods that have been irradiated or contain genetically modified
ingredients (GMOs), antibiotics used in human medicine, hormones
that enhance growth in food-producing animals, chemical levels exceeding
U.S. limits or chemicals not approved for use in this country.
Consumers will be able to choose meat and produce
raised in the USA under the terms of a compromise
farm bill agreed to by a House and Senate conference committee
at the end of April. And in Minot the manager of Marketplace Foods
publicly announced
their compliance with the North Dakota law of labeling fresh
meat as to the country of origin. See
the press release.
Oregon
Rural Action (ORA) helped launch the Genetically
Engineered (GE) Food Labeling Campaign in Oregon, the first
state to put genetically engineered food labeling on the ballot.
Exactly
what is genetic modification? Is it true they're taking genes
from fish and inserting them into a strawberry? Is
there other information on GMO's?
Were fighting for inspection, sanitation, and safety provisions
that ensure a wholesome and safe meat supply.
