1. COMMUNITY ORGANIZING
Why organize, power and self-interest

Purpose: Broaden the participants understanding of why organizing is important and challenge them to think about different approaches that involve people in public life.

Characteristics of community organizations

Purpose: Introduce and explore some of the basic characteristics of groups that practice community organizing as an approach to social change.

Vision and values

Purpose: For participants to articulate a common vision and set of values as they begin the process of building an organization.

How and why we build new chapters

Purpose: Introduce the chapter organizing model to participants and outline the steps involved in building a local chapter.

2. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Structure: planning the first organizational meeting

Purpose: To prepare a group for its organizational kick-off meeting (including approval of by-laws, election of officers and adoption of an issue platform).

Structure: developing committees

Purpose: To develop committees for carrying out the tasks of the organization.

Structure: developing organizational by-laws

Purpose: To develop a set of rules and procedures which facilitate democratic, efficient management of the organization.

Structure: developing organizational officers

Purpose: To develop an effective, efficient and democratic leadership structure for the organization.

Healthy organizations

Purpose: Introduce the concept and stress the importance of conducting regular group health checks, and consulting with others (co-workers, members and leaders) to solve organizational problems.

Branding your organization

Purpose: The purpose of this Branding Workshop is to develop an organizational brand identity map.

Planning

Purpose: For participants to set goals and outline implementation plans for the upcoming
year.

3. MEMBERSHIP
Membership recruitment and one-on-one techniques

Purpose: For participants to discuss the importance of membership, explore the basics of conducting one-on-ones, and learn membership recruitment skills.

Membership systems and recruitment

Purpose: For participants to understand the importance of membership, discuss the basics of setting up a membership system, and learn membership recruitment skills.

Planning a membership drive

Purpose: To plan a membership drive.

4. ISSUES AND CAMPAIGNS
Issue identification

Purpose: For participants to learn to identify issues for community groups to work on.

Issue branding

Purpose: The purpose of this branding workshop is to develop an issue brand identity map.

Developing an issue campaign

Purpose: For participants to learn how to develop a campaign on an issue.

Planning an action

Purpose: For participants to learn how to plan and carry out an action.

Issue campaigns: leverage, power analysis and tactics

Purpose: Discuss issue campaign strategy and tactics, including ways to deal with powerful opponents and decision makers.

Dealing with intimidation

Purpose: For participants to identify and discuss tactics employed by opponents of community groups which depend on intimidation and fear, and discuss ways community groups can counter such tactics.

Negotiation

Purpose: For participants to examine negotiating as a tactic and improve their negotiating techniques.

Research for organizing

Purpose: Learn how to use research as a tool to build the organization and win issues.

Planning an accountability session

Purpose: For participants to prepare for an accountability meeting with a public official.

5. GRASSROOTS FUND-RAISING
Planning for fund-raising

Purpose: Challenge peoples’ attitudes about money, and instill the importance of grassroots fund-raising to creating the changes that we’d all like to see in the world.

Motivating members to fund-raise

Purpose: For participants to recognize fund-raising as a source of organizational power and learn how to motivate people to raise money.

How to plan special events

Purpose: Develop a greater undertanding among the participants of how to plan for and conduct special events.

Soliciting major donors

Purpose: To give people the skills and confidence they need to solicit major donations for their organization.

6. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Leadership development

Purpose: For participants to think critically about what it means to be a leader in a community organization, and become familiar with different leadership techniques.

Expanding a group's leadership pool

Purpose: Explore ways to expand the number of leaders in community organizations.

Running good meetings

Purpose: For participants to learn how to run a good meeting.

Meeting planning and design

Purpose: For staff and leaders to fine tune their skills in planning good meetings, stimulate their thinking about why we have meetings and need discipline in developing specific objectives, recognize the importance of balance between content and process in meeting design, and focus on the lements of the micro agenda.

Why do evaluations?

Purpose: To emphasize the importance of conducting evaluations as a regular part of our work.

Techniques for working with members to be better prepared

Purpose: Help the organizing staff overcome the obstacles they encounter in working with members to prepare for meetings, speeches, press conferences and other activities that require advance planning and preparation.


7. MEDIA AND PUBLIC SPEAKING
Understanding the media

Purpose: For participants to enhance their understanding of the media and how to use it more effectively.

How to speak in public

Purpose: For participants to review the basics of public speaking, and to think through what it takes to prepare for and deliver a good public presentation.

How to Utilize Talk Radio More Effectively

Purpose: Help leaders and staff utilize talk radio to promote their issues and organization.

8. ONE-ON-ONES
One-on-ones: building relationships and power

Purpose: Discuss values, self-interest and power, and the value of one-on-one visits in community organizing.

9. TRAINING SKILLS
Facilitation

Purpose: For staff and leaders to fine tune their facilitation skills, discuss why facilitation is important, and develop and practice facilitation techniques.

Icebreakers

Purpose: For participants to get to know each other and understand why everyone else is involved in the organization.
