Senate Passes Amendment to Encourage New Biofuels

The Senate voted on June 20 to strengthen HR 6, the Renewable Fuels, Energy Efficiency and Consumer Protection Act of 2007, by adding environment and public health safeguards to the biofuels title, including provisions that would encourage new biofuels technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over conventional petroleum fuels.

The amendments passed 58-34 (7 not voting).

The amendment was sponsored by Sens. Bingaman, Boxer, Lieberman, and Reid.
