Senate Defeats Sham Renewable Energy Amendment

The U.S. Senate continued its debate of the federal Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007 to promote more renewable, clean, affordable energy on June 14. Senator Pete Domenici (R-New Mex.) proposed an amendment (roll call vote #211) to eliminate a renewable energy standard and substitute a sham proposal allowing utilities to use dangerous and dirty power sources such as nuclear power to meet the bill’s goal of getting 15% of the nation’s power from clean, renewable, and affordable energy by 2020.

Domenici's amendment would have hampered further promotion of truly clean and renewable resources that the bill’s renewable energy standard is intended to promote.
